Perlan Upgrades

While the weather does not support wave, Airbus Perlan Mission II team is using the opportunity to install some upgrades. We took the wings off to get better access to the interior of the fuselage. Morgan wanted more heat and insulation on our flutter exciters or shakers. The first wing tip photo shows the wires for telemetry. The next photo shows Alec and Loris adding heat and insulation features.  This flutter excitation is Morgan Sandercock’s design and build. The small display monitor is visible in-flight inside the cockpit and downloadable to our ground based telemetry office. There’s a brief video of it shaking the wing tip spar with the graph of the vibrations being built and displayed on the small monitor. https://youtu.be/O9F6nVdvfX4

Michael wanted an HDMI cable from the video cameras in the top of the tail to the cockpit. We took the main wheel fairing off to determine where an additional antenna might be placed without interferring with the other existing antenna. The controller had to be insulated from the cold also. The main battery needed a bit of insulation in the bottom. The wrap around insulating material that Pam and I had sewn back in Minden was doing a great job on the sides and top.

Today we put the wings back on. We used our extremely tall and strong rolling sawhorses. The wing rigging aid made by Tom Stowers now has a bottle jack to allow for small precise movements up or down to align the wings for the spar pins to go in. The winds will be coming our way in a few days. Perlan 2 will be ready!
