Dennis earned a B.S. in astronautics and aeronautics from NYU College of Engineering, and a M.S. and honorary doctorate of engineering from Rensselaer in engineering science. He began his career at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory where he was responsible for designing the trajectories for the Mariner spacecraft missions to Mars and Venus. He then founded Wilshire Associates, a global investment advisory firm.

On April 28, 2001, Dennis made history by becoming the first individual to personally pay to travel in space. After going through complete cosmonaut training, he launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, and served as a crewmember of an eight-day Russian Soyuz mission to the International Space Station. Dennis recently founded and funded the Inspiration Mars Foundation to execute a manned fly-by mission to Mars in 2018.
